Shopify SEO by someone who edits the theme, not just the audit.

Shopify gives every store the same SEO ceiling, and most stores never reach it because the work sits in the theme where the SEO tool cannot go. Collection templates without copy, product pages missing the structured data Google wants, canonicals fighting the app that "fixed" them, Markets emitting hreflang for countries you do not sell to. I fix these in Liquid, for two SEO agencies today and for stores directly.

What Shopify SEO actually consists of

The platform handles the basics - sitemaps, clean URLs, a canonical on every page - and then leaves the parts that decide rankings to the theme. That is where the work is.

  • Collection pages that can rank: an intro block above the grid, a real heading hierarchy, editable per collection, and internal links to the collections that matter
  • Product templates with complete Product and Offer structured data, variant handling that does not create index bloat, and breadcrumbs that match the store’s real hierarchy
  • Canonical and duplicate handling for collection-scoped product URLs, tag pages, vendor pages and filter parameters
  • Hreflang and per-market URLs through Shopify Markets, checked against what is actually sold where
  • Speed: the app scripts that load on every page, render-blocking theme JavaScript, image sizing, third-party tags
  • Blog and content templates that give editorial work a fair chance instead of a default layout

How the work runs

Search Console first, then a crawl of the live store, then the theme code. The findings are ranked by revenue exposure - a broken collection template beats a missing alt attribute - and implemented in a duplicate theme, reviewed, then published. Each change is dated and tracked against the affected pages’ impressions and position bands in the weeks that follow, so the report says what moved, not what was done.

Where a store also needs editorial content or outreach, I work alongside the agency or writer who does that. The technical base is what I own.

For SEO agencies

Two agencies already hand me Shopify and BigCommerce tickets: category hierarchy and breadcrumb schema, variant-group product schema, collection intro copy blocks, canonical tags, meta title templates, sitemaps, hreflang. Same task types, different clients, done white-label. If your PrestaShop client turns up, that is a separate page and the same arrangement.

Read the guide first

The Shopify SEO guide on this site covers the technical checklist in detail and it is free. If you can do it yourself after reading it, do; if you would rather not touch Liquid, that is what this page is for.

Questions people ask first

Which Shopify SEO app should we use?
Usually none, and often one fewer than you have. Most SEO apps inject scripts on every page and duplicate what the theme should do. The specific exceptions are named in the audit.
Can you fix our canonical or hreflang problems?
Yes; those are the two most common tickets I get from agencies. Both are theme and Markets configuration, not app problems, and both are checked in the raw HTML after the change.
Do you also do BigCommerce?
Yes. The same task types on Stencil, for the same agencies.
How is progress reported?
Per change, against Search Console: the pages touched, the date, and what happened to their impressions and position bands afterwards. No composite scores.
